➥What diet for your dog?

First of all, remember that the dog is an animal with a carnivorous diet. Carnivore does not mean that it must be fed only with meat, but that animal protein is the largest part of its diet. However, with its pet lifestyle that evolves in contact with men, the dog tends to become an opportunistic omnivore enjoying the remains (meat or plant) of its masters.

There are many ways to feed your dog:

Industrial foods, among which we find the traditional croquettes, but also the pies or sachets freshness.

The household rations, prepared by you and composed of starchy, vegetable meat …

The mix of both models: industrial and homemade.

There are advantages and disadvantages to industrial rations such as household rations, but which ones?

➥Advantages and disadvantages of industrial foods

There are many industrial foods on the pet market, and it’s hard to make a choice. The price is usually the guarantee of the quality of the croquettes or boxes. Focus on premium quality foods that meet a number of requirements for the origin of raw materials.

Industrial feeds have been developed to exactly meet the needs of your dog when he needs it; we, therefore, find growing dog food, adult, sterilized adult, senior …

➥Advantages and disadvantages of household rations

The fact-house is also trendy in pets, but be careful, do not do anything. The diet 1/3 of meat1/3 of starch and 1/3 of vegetable is not so valid, it is a little more complicated. In addition to adding minerals, vitamins … Balancing dog food is not easy. Talk to your veterinarian who will help you calculate a household ration that is appropriate for your dog’s age and size.

We must also be aware that preparing to eat your dog every day is a lot of time and money.

Think about the volume that must also be taken to prepare, if it is true that for a small dog it is relatively easy, think twice before you start a household ration for a 15 kg dog (about 200 g of meat, 200g of rice, and 500g of zucchini for example + mineral supplement and oil).

➥What is the cost?

Croquettes even very high end remain the best  quality/price report. The average cost varies between 250 dollars for a dog of 5 kgs and 900 dollars for a dog of 30 kgs, but this average cost can quickly increase if your dog follows a special diet (because of an illness for example), and reach the 1500 dollars for a dog of about 30 kilos.

Cold boxes and packs are the most expensive foods, but they are often preferred by dogs because of their palatability. The average cost for a small dog fed exclusively through this is about 600 dollars, and that for a large dog easily reaches 2000 dollars. For these foods too, the cost increases if the diet is specific to a disease.

The household ration is the compromise of kibble and cans, at least from the point of view of cost. A small dog represents a budget of about 300 dollars and a big dog of about 1800 dollars. Here too, everything will depend on the quality of raw materials that you choose (organic farming, reasoned ..).

Household ration against industrial diet, the choice is hard to do. If you decide to opt for a little of both, be careful not to overfeed your dog at the risk of seeing it gain weight.

The costs and quantities are given here as an indication. Consultation with your veterinarian is strongly advised to establish a balanced diet.
